Oldies but Goodies- The Sugarcubes

In Oldies but Goodies I will discuss bands that you have probably heard of by now but maybe forgot how much you loved. Most of them will have been around for at least a decade and some might even have broken up by now. The Sugarcubes are one such band. They were together between 1986 and 1992, but are still constantly mentioned by "music snobs" when someone mentions Bjork.

The Sugarcubes was the band that Bjork was in after her (very unknown) band KUKL and before her becoming a solo artist. The Sugarcubes are slightly more pop than her solo work but slightly less punk than KUKL. Their songs strike me as a mix of very modern and VERY eighties sounding. As I listen to the albums I can't help but notice how similar some of the songs are to the B-52s. In fact, the male singer of the band sounds a lot like if Fred Schneider from the B-52s and Hedwig (& the Angry Inch) had a child.

Now let me start by saying that I am not obsessed with this band, nor am I really in love with this band. But I like this band and sometimes that is more than enough to get you coming back over and over again. I personally love Bjork's bizarre sound and some of the songs are just as good as some of her earlier solo work. My favorite songs the band recorded are Motorcrash, Birthday, Walkabout, I'm Hungry, Fucking in Rhythm and Sorrow, and Hit. The videos are really just as good. There is a certain level of eighties cheesiness that is so irresistable. I also love how you can see Bjork's famous hairstyles and dancing style from when they began.

Check it out!
